To understand the effects of temperature, pH and mechanical stress on the pressure dissolution of quartz, two experiments using monocrystalline quartz samples were conducted. The first was a closed-fluid experiment to investigate the effect of pH, and the second was a flow-through experiment to investigate stress and temperature effects. To initiate the pressure dissolution, a pair of samples was immersed in a solution with a prescribed pH. The samples were stressed mechanically by pressing one sample against the other. In the closed-fluid experiments, the pH of the solution was fixed to 7, 9, 11 and 13, the applied stress was approximately 200 MPa and temperature 25°C. The flow-through experiments were conducted at three different temperatures (35, 50 and 75°C) at the same pH 11.7. The value of the applied stress was 7.32, 13.72, 21.42 or 25.27 MPa. During each of these dissolution tests, the solution was regularly sampled and analyzed by an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry technique to measure Si-concentration. With the measured Si-concentration, a dissolution rate constant was computed the different pH, stress and temperature conditions. The rate constant is proportional to pH, stress and temperature, as indicated in the literature. It should be noted that the rate constant for the highest stress (200 MPa) was considerably greater than for the other cases. In addition, island-channel patterns characterized by micro-cracks a few nanometers in length were seen on the dissolved parts of the samples. The findings and the measured data in this paper may be useful for the future development of theoretical models for pressure dissolution and its validation.  相似文献

A long-term warming pattern of global subsurface ocean was detected separately from other natural variations. Three dominant modes were extracted: a long-term warming mode, a mode related to the El Niño/Southern Oscillation, and a mode related to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. The long-term warming mode explained 78 % of the global mean temperature variance from the surface to a depth of 300 m, and the other two modes could explain most of the residual variance. Subsurface warming associated with the long-term warming mode was strong in the subtropics. In contrast, there was a local minimum of warming in the northern hemisphere subarctic ocean, and warming was suppressed in subsurface waters south of the equator. Atmospheric changes associated with the long-term warming mode showed negative (positive) sea level pressure anomalies at high (middle) latitudes in both hemispheres, and an intensification and/or a poleward expansion of mid-latitude westerlies. Wind stress curl changes were negative in the subtropics and positive in the subarctic of the northern hemisphere; changes that were consistent with the strong warming in the subtropics and the local minimum of warming in the subarctic. Warming of Southern Ocean subsurface waters coincided with southward migration and intensification of westerly winds, whereas surface warming to the south of 50°S was suppressed, probably by strengthened northward Ekman transport. Positive wind stress curl off the equator with weakening of the tropical easterly winds in the Pacific and Indian Oceans was consistent with the subsurface negative temperature anomaly there.  相似文献

To better understand the vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the tropical and subtropical North Pacific, we used fast repetition rate fluorometry to investigate the photo-physiological condition of the phytoplankton assemblage in this region between February and March 2007. Along 155°E, between the equator and 24°N, the peak of fluorescence (F m), an indication of the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), was deeper than the top of the nitracline and occurred at the 2.4 ± 1.3 % (mean ± SD) light depth (relative to 0 m). The photochemical efficiency (F v/F m) and effective absorption cross-section of photosystem II (σPSII) were low at the surface but increased rapidly at depths between the top of the nitracline (40–138 m) and the DCM (70–158 m), an indication that the photo-physiological condition of the phytoplankton improved below the top of the nitracline. The depth of the maximal F v/F m [Z(F v/F m max)] was 18–32 m deeper than the DCM and corresponded to the 0.8 ± 0.2 % light depth. The values of F v/F m at the Z(F v/F m max) were 20 % higher than those at the DCM and averaged 0.48 ± 0.01. These results suggest that the phytoplankton assemblage beneath the DCM had a high potential photosynthetic performance capacity and was growing by using the very low ambient light in this region.  相似文献

The seasonality of the vertical air temperature profile in an urban area in the vicinity of the coast was studied. The vertical air temperature profile showed the characteristic seasonality. In the summer, the atmosphere was thermally stratified in the 60–100 m layer, while the 20–60 m layer was unstable or weakly stable throughout the day due to the strong solar radiation. On the other hand, no temperature inversion layer was observed in the winter presumably due to the heat supply from the sea as well as the strong wind speed in the vicinity of the coast. The vertical air temperature profiles at nighttime in the spring and autumn were transitional between the summer and the winter. In contrast, the vertical air temperature profile in the daytime in the spring was similar to that in the summer, while that in the autumn was comparable to that in the winter. Characteristic findings in the study due to the site location, i.e., in the vicinity of the coast, can be summarized as follows: (1) the elevated temperature inversion layer at noon was observed in the summer, and (2) no temperature inversion layer was observed in the winter.  相似文献

The solutions of vertical oscillation of finite amplitude of a fluid parcel in a heterogeneous, incompressible sea water were obtained, solving rigorously the equation of motion, retaining small terms to the third order of the amplitude non-dimensionized by a vertical reference length. The motion is asymmetric with respect to its equilibrium position and the period of motion is longer than that of infinitesimal Väisälä oscillation. When the vertical velocity of the parcel exceeds certain critical value, oscillation of large amplitude sets in near the outskirts of the thermocline, its period being more than twice larger than that of Väisälä oscillation. The apprehension whether this type of the increased vertical motion might be influenced or denied by the horizontal motion in such a case as in internal waves is also discussed. From some observations which will be appeared in Part II, we found oscillations of large amplitude with the period which is in good agreement with the theoretical result.  相似文献

Rare earth elements (REEs) have been successfully used as a sediment tracer, but the REE technique has never been used for studying sediment sources for a multi‐year period. A nearly four‐year field experiment was conducted on a small agricultural watershed near Coshocton, OH, USA, to assess the applicability of the REE technique for a multi‐year period and to evaluate the relative contributions of sediment sources in the watershed. Tracer depletion and tracer enrichment ratio (ratio of the tracer concentrations in sediment to the concentrations in the soil in the areas of application) were evaluated to examine the applicability and accuracy of the technique. A minimum of 91 per cent of the mass of the applied elements was still available on any individual morphological element at the end of the experimental period. The tracer enrichment ratio varied from 0·4 to 2·3, and it was not significantly related to time. The relative contributions of six morphological elements within the watershed were evaluated as proportions to total sediment yield. The relative contribution of the lower channel was significantly increased as a function of the amount of sediment yield, while that of the lower backslope was significantly decreased. The relative contribution of the lower channel significantly decreased as a function of cumulative sediment yield, while the contributions of the shoulder and the upper backslope significantly increased. Our results showed that the REE technique can be used to track sediment sources for a relatively long period with two limitations or potential sources of error associated with a selective depletion of tracers and a contamination of downslope areas with tagged sediments from upslope areas. Synthetic Fe3+-melilites containing NaCaFe3+-Si2O7-, Ca2Fe3+AlSiO7- or Sr2Fe3+AlSiO7-components have been studied by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The spectrum of åkermanite containing an NaCaFe3+Si2O7-component consists of one doublet identified to belong to Fe3+ in T1 sites. The spectra of åkermanite and gehlenite containing Ca2Fe3+ AlSiO7- or Sr2Fe3+ AlSiO7-component consist of two doublets. The inner and outer doublets are identified to belong to Fe3+ in the less distorted T1 and that in the more distorted T2 sites, respectively. The area ratios of the spectra show that the site occupancy of Fe3+ (T1) in gehlenite is less than that in åkermanite in which the distribution of Fe3+ in T1 and T2 sites is apparently random. The different distributions can be explained in terms of competition between minimizing the deficiency in the electrostatic valence and the preference of Al for T1 sites which the isomer shift measurements show to be more ionic.  相似文献

An ensemble of twenty four coupled ocean-atmosphere models has been compared with respect to their performance in the tropical Pacific. The coupled models span a large portion of the parameter space and differ in many respects. The intercomparison includes TOGA (Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere)-type models consisting of high-resolution tropical ocean models and coarse-resolution global atmosphere models, coarse-resolution global coupled models, and a few global coupled models with high resolution in the equatorial region in their ocean components. The performance of the annual mean state, the seasonal cycle and the interannual variability are investigated. The primary quantity analysed is sea surface temperature (SST). Additionally, the evolution of interannual heat content variations in the tropical Pacific and the relationship between the interannual SST variations in the equatorial Pacific to fluctuations in the strength of the Indian summer monsoon are investigated. The results can be summarised as follows: almost all models (even those employing flux corrections) still have problems in simulating the SST climatology, although some improvements are found relative to earlier intercomparison studies. Only a few of the coupled models simulate the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in terms of gross equatorial SST anomalies realistically. In particular, many models overestimate the variability in the western equatorial Pacific and underestimate the SST variability in the east. The evolution of interannual heat content variations is similar to that observed in almost all models. Finally, the majority of the models show a strong connection between ENSO and the strength of the Indian summer monsoon.  相似文献
